Sauerbruch Hutton
Berlin, Germany
Matthias Sauerbruch (Konstanz, 1955) and Louisa Hutton (Norwich, 1957) founded their own studio in Berlino in 1989.
Characteristic of their design approach is the integration of the various components determining a building's comfort, in terms of both the users' sensory perceptions and the performance of technical systems. Attention is dedicated to the building's outer shell as an environmental control system for energy conservation, interpreted through the use of original polychromy and curved building surfaces.
Some particularly innovative German buildings bear their name, including: the GSW headquarters (Berlin, 1992-1999), which brought international acclaim to the designers, the Pharmacological Research institute in Biberach (2001-2002), the fire and police station for the government district in Berlin (2002-2004), the Federal Environmental Agency (Dessau, 2001-2005). In Italy they built MAC 567, a mixed-use on the former Carlo Erba factory site in Milan; what is probably their most important and representative work, the Museum Brandhorst, opened in Munich in 2008.
