Souto de Moura Arquitectos
Porto, Portugal
Eduardo Souto de Moura (Porto, 1952) worked with Alvaro Siza and also for SAAL (Serviço Ambulatorio de Apojo local), an interdisciplinary group estabilished to cope with Portugal's shortage of affordable housing.
His museum and exhibition-venue designs include: the Casa das Artes (Porto, 1981-1991), the Knowledge of the Seas Pavilion at Expo 98 in Lisbon and the Portugal Pavilion at Expo 2000 in Hannover, the conversion of the Porto customs building to create the Museum of Transports and Communications (1993-2002), the Casa del Cinema Manoel de Oliveira (Porto, 1998-2002), the Centro de Arte Contemporânea (Bragança, 2002-2008) and the Casa das Historias Paula Rego in Cascais (2005-2009).
Souto de Moura stands out as the most consistent and original heir of the cultural tradition that had formed in his country in the previous decades: his works re-elaborate traditional building types, using a synthetic language and construction methods with low technological content.
